About Maatila Woodworks

Welcome to Maatila Woodworks, where the rich legacy of woodworking is not just preserved but passionately celebrated. The word 'Maatila' holds a special meaning in my heart – it means 'farm' in Finnish, a tribute to the place where my journey in woodworking began. Nestled in the wooded landscape of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, our family farm is more than just a piece of land; it's a cradle of tradition and skill passed down through generations.

My story is deeply rooted in the values and lessons learned on the farm, where I first discovered the art of woodworking. Under the watchful eye and skilled hands of my grandfather, a descendant of immigrants from Lapland, Finland, he learned not just the techniques, but the soul of woodworking. It was here, among the whispers of the trees and the steady rhythm of chiseling and carving, that a lifelong passion was ignited.

My grandfather, a man of immense skill and profound wisdom, and my mentor. His teachings went beyond the craft. They were lessons in patience, precision, and the pursuit of excellence. In 2021, I lost my grandfather, but his spirit and legacy continue to inspire every piece I create.

At Maatila Woodworks, I am more than just a woodworker. Each piece of custom furniture we craft is a homage to my grandfather. We strive to honor his memory by following in his footsteps, aspiring to reach the heights of craftsmanship he exemplified.

Join us in this journey of honoring the past and crafting the future, one exquisite piece of custom furniture at a time. At Maatila Woodworks, every creation is more than just wood and nails. It's a story of family, heritage, and the enduring beauty of handcrafted artistry.
